WHAT IS A SHOWER SYSTEM?

A shower system is a set that includes all the components necessary to ensure that you will have a shower worthy of the name, including the taps. All the individual parts are perfectly matched in terms of function and appearance and come from the same manufacturer. Spare some time for choosing each element individually to obtain the desired product and save money! Indeed, the price of a shower system is lower than that of its separated components. You can be sure that each element has been carefully selected and that they complement each other optimally. Each manufacturer produces several shower systems in different price categories to please everyone.

SHOWER SYSTEM COMPONENTS

Depending on the model, shower systems may consist of the following elements:

✔ Head Shower
✔ Shower Rail
✔ Hand Shower
✔ Bracket or Slider for the Hand Shower
✔ Hose for Hand Shower
✔ Shower Tap

THE CHOICE OF THE HEAD SHOWER

Shower systems include two showers: the head and the hand shower. The head shower comes in two main forms: exposed or concealed with wall or ceiling mounting. Head showers are larger than hand showers and can come in a variety of shapes and sizes. They usually provide a luxurious rainfall stream. The size of your shower head and the number of nozzles will largely determine the quality of the rainfall jet. A size of 20 cm or more is recommended. You should also check whether the shower head is fixed or not. If it is fixed, which is mostly the case, you should install it in such a way that you and your family members can stand under it. Height-adjustable head showers are especially convenient when several people of different sizes use them, but they are rare.

THE HAND SHOWER

In many shower systems, the hand shower is placed with a sliding bracket or slider on the shower rail. Hand showers offer a lot of flexibility. They also have the advantage that their height can be adjusted and are very useful for showering children. If you want a multi-purpose hand shower, check that you can adjust the height and that it can be removed from the bracket. Also, it is a good idea to check the water flow rate. It is usually between 12 and 17 litres per minute; very comfortable but not very economical. Many showers have a water-saving technology such as the Hansgrohe EcoSmart and GROHE EcoJoy for example. Hand showers are often offered in the classic round shape. If a special look is desired, square or stick-shaped models are available.

SHOWER TAPS

The faucet is the control centre of the shower. You can choose between a traditional faucet (single-lever mixer) or a thermostatic valve. The great advantage of the thermostatic tap is that the desired water temperature is reached quickly and remains constant. If you have small children, it can prevent burns due to a sudden change in temperature. In addition, a temperature limiter prevents the setting above 38°C. Of course, this can be easily deactivated to allow higher temperatures, usually by pressing and turning the control button.

CONCEALED OR EXPOSED SHOWER SYSTEM?

In the surface-mounted version, all elements of the shower system are visible, especially the column and the tap. Exposed shower systems are ideal for quick installation on the wall. In the case of a concealed shower system, the column and the tap disappear, leaving only the essential parts: the overhead shower, the hand shower and its hose, as well as the shower control panel. The system that suits you best depends on the circumstances. Recessed models are particularly popular in modern bathrooms as well as in walk-ins. Since some of the technology is installed behind the wall, extensive renovations might be required. If reparation is needed, then it also gets complicated.

CHOOSE BETWEEN DIFFERENT TYPES OF JETS

If you have changing needs when showering, you need a system that has more than a single jet and it is often the case. Many overhead showers have only one spray type, but there are also models where you can change it such as GROHE Euphoria 260 and Hansgrohe Rainmaker Select for example. The rain shower is combined with other shower jets, such as an extra powerful, massaging or extra soft jet. The soft shower spray is enriched with air and reduces water consumption.

Hand showers generally have several types of jets, such as the normal, massage and air enriched soft spray. When choosing a shower system, you can check whether the shower heads are easy to clean. Manufacturers use silicone nozzles that can be descaled by simply wiping them with your finger.

WHAT MATERIALS ARE THE SHOWER SYSTEMS MADE OF?

Since bathroom faucets are used daily, they must also be robust for a long-lasting use. Constantly opening and closing the shower faucet can put a poorly manufactured, low-quality material to the test. Therefore, when designing your bathroom, choose high-quality materials. Brass, stainless steel and plastic are used for shower systems.

Coatings such as chrome give a shiny appearance and make them easier to clean. If the coating is very smooth, dirt, limescale and germs will not stick to it.

Brass
It is the most common material for bathroom faucets. The material is malleable, making it easy to manufacture various shapes. For the user, it is a robust and easy-care material. It is usually chrome-plated, which gives it a nice shiny appearance and good corrosion resistance.

Stainless Steel
Stainless steel is a particularly popular material for shower systems. It is elegant and corrosion-resistant and at the same time very hygienic. On the other hand, it is expensive. Stainless steel is available in matt, brushed or gloss finishes.

Plastic
Plastic is a very light material that leaves a lot of room for manoeuvre. The most diverse colours and shapes are possible, so that plastic shower systems can be adapted to the most diverse bathroom furniture. However, this material is not very robust and has a limited lifespan compared to brass or stainless steel.

In addition to brass, plastic and stainless steel, the shower systems can also contain safety glass elements. To ensure that the shower systems retain their appearance for a long time, they must be cleaned regularly. Gentle cleaning products are recommended. Abrasive cleaners and scouring sponges can scratch surfaces. It is best to follow the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning and maintaining your shower system.
